Stephen “Stoven” Hutchinson

Stephen “Stoven” Hutchinson is a North Carolina-based contemporary artist whose paintings are distinguished by bold color, rhythmic movement, and a highly personal vocabulary of abstract forms. Working largely outside the traditional gallery system, Hutchinson developed his practice independently, allowing his visual language to evolve apart from the expectations of the commercial art market.

His compositions bring together organic and geometric forms that overlap, collide, and emerge from richly worked fields of color. Saturated passages of blue, orange, yellow, green, and red create a sense of constant movement, while repeated shapes and densely layered surfaces encourage the viewer to continually discover new relationships within each painting. At times playful and exuberant, and at others introspective, Hutchinson’s work occupies a space between recognizable imagery and pure abstraction.

In 2023, Hutchinson’s work was featured in the exhibition Ripples at the Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science in Evansville, Indiana. It was through this exhibition that his work first came to the attention of Eisele Gallery. Despite having developed a substantial and distinctive body of work, Hutchinson had never previously received formal gallery representation.

Recognizing the originality of his paintings and the strength of his individual vision, Eisele Gallery began working with Hutchinson and is proud to introduce his work to a broader audience.
