Stead, descended from a line of artists and singers, has been painting since his teenage years. He pursued a Master of Fine Arts degree from Ohio University and, post-graduation, was hired to found a fine arts program at their campus in Portland (later Shawnee State University). He retired after authoring eight new BFA degrees, witnessing the construction of the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts, and ushering the BFA into its spot as second largest degree program at SSU. In his retirement in Cincinnati, he paints works that are so vivid and alive that they sometimes seem to leap off the canvas and dance.
