Mitch Billis (1937-2021) was born in New York in a small town of Italian immigrants, an upbringing that taught him the value of work and would become a large influence on the rest of his life. He received a degree in engineering and briefly taught high school math, but found himself changing paths when in the early 70s he watched a watercolor demonstration and was struck to his core by the process. Over the next stretch of his life he continued to take painting classes and grew to renown as a plein air artist. By the time of his death in 2021 he could boast great success, with works hanging in homes and galleries across the nation and several of his children building equally respected careers in the art world.
