Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) was an artist, poet, playwright, and director. He is most well known for his Orphic Trilogy of films, his stage plays Orphée, Les Parents terribles, La Machine à écrire, and L'Aigle à deux têtes, and his novels Le Grand Écart, Le Livre blanc, and Les Enfants Terribles. His visual artwork often fell into the realm of the surreal, using bright colors and distorted figures to create a unique intrigue. He is widely regarded as one of the foremost avant-garde artists of his time, and his work was a great influence on both the Surrealist and Dadaist movements.
