Ralph Eugene Meatyard (1925-1972) worked in Lexington, Kentucky as an optometrist and a photographer. His photos were dreamlike, blurry and abstracted, with sometimes fantastical subject matter, most prominently grotesque masks. He gained renown for his experimental work and was featured in several solo exhibitions across the nation. His works are in the collections of museums like the Met, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Eastman Museum.
