Francis Focer Brown (1891-1971) was a highly awarded American Impressionist painter, professor and head of the Fine Arts Department at Ball State Teachers College (present-day Ball State University) until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1957, and the director of the Ball State Art Gallery until 1946. Brown's work in oils, pastels, and watercolors bordered on Impressionism, though he was known for experimentation and regularly ventured into more Fauve and Expressionist styles. He also had a reputation for his skill at painting atmospherics that far exceeded his colleagues; he struck a perfect balance between boldness and restraint in his colors, materials, and brushwork.
