With an elevation of just over 9000ft, it is a giant of the North Cascades and is an incredibly complex mountain to ski and climb. About 15 years ago I did indeed get to ski Mt Shuksan with a mountaineering group based out of Vancouver. Mt Baker ski area offers the best access into North Cascades National Park and the base area puts you within a comfortable two day trip up to the summit and back. With this painting I decided to add a contour line across the mountain at the 6000 ft. level. Eliciting an idea of route finding in complex mountain terrain, it also hints at forms of technology we use to make our selves feel more at ease in such a hostile and unforgiving environment.
