Herman Wessel (1878-1961) was born in Vincennes, Indiana, to Prussian immigrants. He moved to Cincinnati at 13 to study art in a world headed by artists like Joseph Sharp and Frank Duveneck. He graduated from the Art Academy of Cincinnati and, after a stint in Europe, returned to begin a forty-year teaching career there. His work was comprised of landscapes and seascapes in watercolors and oil as well as murals, and later in life he became an art restorer and an expert at authenticating Duveneck works.
