Roy Petley is a British painter, influenced by impressionist tradition and his upbringing as an abandoned child of the Woodlands School in Sussex. At sixteen he hitchhiked to Italy where he supported himself by drawing tourists, and when he returned to England a year later he began exhibiting in galleries and working in the art department of the Greenwich Theatre. Today he runs the Petleys fine art gallery in London with his son, with the aim of bolstering the careers of other artists. His work, throughout his time as an artist, has been characterized by his love for painting plein air and the nostalgic romanticism of the olden days.
